By Glaucio Nóbrega
This book was written for millions of Brazilians suffering from one of the most common diseases in medicine today: Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD). written in an extremely simple and practical language, but based solely on science. Concepts about the disease, its medical and social importance, its risks and complications, its relationship with esophageal cancer, its diagnostic investigation, as well as dietary and postural care which should be adopted by patients are themes of this book. In separate chapters, issues such as gastroesophageal reflux during pregnancy and sleep in children and babies are discussed, and the indication of anti-reflux surgery as a therapeutic proposal. The medications usually used in its treatment (omeprazole and its correlates) and the possible side effects arising from the long-term use of these substances are also addressed in this work. Finally, a test in the form of a questionnaire is presented to identify the possible patient with GERD, in addition to a specialized bibliography, recommended for patients and physicians who want to delve deeper into the subject.
