Digitization is a megatrend that is also pervading the health and care service sectors. Information and communication technologies are increasingly providing impetus to support health and care services: e.g. televisite – teleconsultation, monitoring – AI – decision support systems, medical apps, digital patient files. The need for technical support is often justified by the lack of skilled workers. Digitization also has the potential to fundamentally change the care process, from working with clients to administrative structures. How the use of digitally supported technologies can be successfully implemented, especially in the sensitive area of geriatric care, while always keeping an eye on people, explain the authors of this essential using examples from the fields of augmented reality, robotics, fall sensors and care documentation. They are guided by the concept of strategic man-machine partnership. The new requirements for the qualification of the actors involved are discussed as well as questions of technological prerequisites.
