The desired result of the Dermatology Board Review activity is to enable participants to adequately prepare for certifying and recertifying examinations as well as the maintenance of certification assessment activities. In order to accomplish this goal, the proposed program offers a comprehensive dermatology regimen that covers the entire spectrum of board-relevant topics. It is meant to be a comprehensive review of possible topics that could appear on the certifying exam. The will focus on general dermatology topics, such as basic science, basement membrane biology, dermatological manifest of internal disease, hair and nail biology/disorders, pediatric dermatology, drug metabolism, as well as dermatopathology and procedural dermatology. High yield, board relevant information will be provided in lecture form, followed by self-assessment board-style questions with accompanying answers/explanations.
Description
The Dermatology Board Review offers an educationally valuable review of Dermatology and purposeful regimen that will prepare participants for the Dermatology Board exam, maintenance of certification self assessment questions, and recertifying exam. It is meant to be a comprehensive review of possible topics that could appear on the exam. The course will focus on general dermatology topics such as basic science, basement membrane biology, dermatological manifest of internal disease, hair and nail biology/disorders, skin cancer, pediatric dermatology, drug metabolism, and many more. Sections will be dedicated to reviewing both exam relevant procedural dermatology and dermatopathology.
Each topic will be covered in a one hour lecture. Participants will be able to access lectures via Online, DVDs, or Audio CDs at their leisure and comfort. Lectures will be projected in powerpoint format with the speakers’ commentary superimposed with each associated slide. Participants will be provided will the powerpoint slides to allow for note taking and ease of review, both of which will enhance the educational experience and ultimately outcomes.
Upon completely viewing the each lecture, participants will be required to complete a five to 10 question quiz. Quiz questions will be multiple-choice or true-false and will include pictures taken from the PowerPoint presentation that are a part of the lecture. Once the participant passes the quiz by correctly answering 60% or more of the questions, the lecture will be successfully completed. Upon completion of the lecture and passing the associated quiz, participants will be able to submit for continuing education credit.
Participants will also be provided with surveys as a means of course evaluation in order to further evaluate any unmet needs and continually improve this enduring academic program.
Intended Audience
The primary target audience includes all dermatology residents and practicing physicians who are preparing for the American Board of Dermatology’s certifying and recertifying examinations. Secondary audiences include all dermatologists wishing to benchmark their medical knowledge in general dermatology and/or the subspecialties of dermatopathology, surgical dermatology, pediatric dermatology, and medical dermatology against competence standards as determined by the American Board of Dermatology.

Learning Objectives
After viewing this activity, participants will demonstrate the ability to:
- Define their scope of knowledge of basic and clinical dermatological science
- Recognize areas of weakness in their knowledge of dermatology to achieve improvements
- Evaluate and diagnose dermatology and dermatopathology lesions and entities
- Predict material that may be covered on the American Board of Dermatology’s certifying exam and MOC- D/recertifying exam
- Assess ability to diagnose the 150 conditions identified by the American Board of Dermatology (ABD) as required for the General Dermatology module of the Maintenance of Certification in Dermatology (MOC-D) exam
- Identify areas needing additional study in preparation for the certifying exam and the MOC-D / Recertification examination
- Recognize the format used for the certifying exam and the General Dermatology module of the MOC-D/ Recertification examination
- Express a commitment to lifelong learning and self-assessment
