A thorough guide for readers to quickly gain an update on standard diagnosis and treatment methods for axial spondyloarthritis. Approximately 80 illustrations and images are used throughout the text to exemplify the disease and diagnostic and treatment algorithms. Easily accessible text and tables review the current treatment recommendations, and emerging treatment options based on recent clinical trials.

Description: This manual provides a reasonably concise overview of axial spondyloarthritis with an emphasis on definition and classification.
Purpose: The authors’ purpose is to increase early detection and treatment of axial spondyloarthritis, which is a worthy goal given the evidence that treatment is more effective early in the course of disease. The information they provide would help if read by the appropriate providers, though it is not clear that this book would appeal to those providers.
Audience: For the stated goal, the audience should be primary care physicians, at least in the U.S. However, it appears aimed more towards residents interested in rheumatology or early career rheumatology trainees.
Features: The first half of the book focuses on classification, spending a significant amount of time defining terms. Later sections are of more clinical relevance, and color illustrations, including demonstrations of appropriate physical exams, are helpful.
Assessment: Although a surprisingly dense book for its short length, it is more reader friendly than others. It would not be useful as a quick reference, but it does provide a reasonable overview for practitioners with limited experience with axial spondyloarthropathies.
