As a supposedly natural part of medical practice, the ‘medical art’ is a seemingly familiar phenomenon that is generally accepted in everyday life. Only at second glance do ambiguities and ambivalences emerge. A substantial examination of the term, its implications and its status – especially under the changed conditions of scientifically based, technologized and economized medicine – has so far been lacking. Through the sociological analysis of the work, fundamental elements of the ‘medical art’ can be empirically specified and grounded in theory, and their significance in the context of current medical practice can be demonstrated.
