The general objective of this book is to serve as a guide for medical training and as a tool for the practical and daily management of patients who consult the emergency services with acute abdominal pain. The text begins with a basic review of pathophysiology, semiology and general approach to the acute abdomen. It continues with the most common causes of acute abdomen in order of frequency: acute appendicitis, biliary lithiasic pathology, acute pancreatitis, intestinal obstruction, complicated peptic ulcer, acute abdomen of urological cause, liver abscess and abdominal vascular emergencies. The following chapters address the management of high-risk patients with acute abdomen such as: children, the elderly, pregnant women, and patients hospitalized in Intensive Care Units. It continues with the chapter that addresses the management of patients with acute abdomen of medical cause and ends with two chapters oriented to the rational use of diagnostic images and laboratory tests. The importance of this academic text lies in combining in a simple way the pedagogical and the practical, with a theoretical review of the best evidence available in literature.
