By Johannes Köbberling
Alternative medicine is booming. More and more people in Germany are looking for advice and help for their various ailments in gentle medicine. In view of this popularity, however, there are also scientific, medical and ethical questions about the effectiveness and effects of alternative methods. The book addresses some of these questions and compares the effectiveness as the basis of scientifically oriented medicine to the effects without effectiveness of alternative medical applications. The separating differences between evidence-based medicine and complementary medical methods are described in a value-neutral manner. The author, a well-known advocate of evidence-based medicine, wants to get to the bottom of the non-specific effects – the so-called context effects – of complementary medical applications and describes in which situations these effects can also be used therapeutically in scientific medicine. The book is primarily aimed at patients and doctors who want to deal with alternative medical applications and want to get to the bottom of the tension between rational understanding of the ineffectiveness and the effect they have experienced.
