By Francisco Monteiro de Castro Junior
It is estimated that 600,000 new cases of head and neck cancer occur per year, making this neoplasm the sixth most common cancer in the world. Despite affecting a visible and easily inspected anatomical region, most cases are diagnosed in advanced clinical stages, incurring a high mortality rate, most often in people in the productive phase of their lives. e Pescoço, faced with this serious medical and social problem, established two targets as recommendations to mitigate this situation. The first is to strengthen health systems and introduce approaches to awareness, risks, prevention and early detection of head and neck cancer. The second goal aims to improve the specialization of physicians, updating their knowledge and skills through Continuing Education Programs. The Brazilian Society of Head and Neck Surgery has sought to fulfill its mission in our country, but there is still, undeniably, a lack of information, not only among the general population, but also among physicians and health professionals. We observe an even more critical condition in the academic environment and especially in medical graduation courses, in which there is no Head and Neck Surgery discipline in the vast majority of curricula. The dissemination of up-to-date information and knowledge is always very welcome in the sense of favoring the dissemination and contributing to the improvement of medical practice.
