In February 1917, James Loeb suffered from the most severe manic episode of his bipolar disorder to date. Medical reports were prepared about the treatment by Emil Kraepelin and the course of events, which Antonia von Hirsch analyzed critically. This unique document of the “Disease Reports of Mr. J. Loeb” reflects the lege artis treatment of a highly manic patient in the first half of the 20th century. In addition, on the basis of this and in connection with other text documents, the author can for the first time make a diagnosis for James Loeb, whose own experience of suffering was the reason for the foundation of the Research Institute for Psychiatry Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität received his doctorate with this work.
