by Ronald J. Comer
Published in 2011, the Eighth Edition of Ron Comer’s Abnormal Psychology included coverage of anticipated changes resulting from the upcoming DSM-5. Now that edition will be available in an updated version that will reflect the DSM-5’s final release.
DSM-5 changes in each chapter are subject to confirmation of proposed revisions by the DSM-5 task force. Highlights will likely include:
- Fully-revised Chapter 4, Clinical Assessment, Diagnosis and Treatment and revised ?Call for Change? sections throughout the text that present the DSM-5 in the context of previous DSMs, helping students appreciate how and why it was developed.
- Fully updated to include changes in criteria, labels, and categorizations to reflect the DSM-5.
- Use of a more dimensional approach where appropriate to describe various disorders and assess the severity of impairment.
Carefully integrated new coverage. Updates will be made without changing the basic structure of the chapters and, in many cases, without changing page numbers. Instructors will not have to redo the chapter order in their syllabi, minimizing course disruption.
Updated media and supplements. PsychPortal, the test bank, the study guide, the instructor?s manual, and the PowerPoint sets will all be revised to match the DSM-5 Update version of the textbook. In addition, Comer?s popular casebook, Case-Studies for Abnormal Psychology, will be available in a new edition, with new case studies of contemporary patients, reflecting DSM-5 changes.
